Len's April CD "Speaking In Tongues" Mailed

The first song was the inspiration for this mix, with its exotic mood, inscrutable lyrics and evocation of somewhere unplaceable - somewhere... else. This collection is about the sound of language and the language of sound; I don't have a clue what anyone is saying - none of the songs are in English - but I think I can tell what they mean.

Speaking In Tongues
1. Blue Canary - Maria Koseva and Nikolai Tomov
2. U Plavu Zoru - Pink Martini
3. Ndongoy Daara - Orchestra Baobab
4. Bossa Cubana - Los Zafiros
5. Ewe Mwana - Mbaraka Mwinshehe & The Morogoro Jazz Band
6. La I LaI La - George Lee Larnyoh
7. Dounia - Achille Gajo & Les Cultures Projet Feat. Oumou Sangare
8. Garra - Marcos Valle
9. A Vida Em Seus Métodos Diz Calma - Di Melo
10. Divka S Jablky - Mahagon
11. Mas Que Nada - Elza Soares
12. Taiyoh Yaroh - The Jaguars
13. …Ve Olüm - Üç Hürel
14. Lezelalem Nuri - Lemma Demissew
15. Kulun Mankwalesh - Mahmoud Ahmed (Ibex Band)
16. Je Suis Un Sauvage - Alfred Panou & Art Ensemble Of Chicago
17. Naam - Christy Azuma + Uppers International

Len, dude, this is an awesome disc! Question: who are the Jaguars, and where are they from, and from what era? I think it's odd that they sing in a foreign tongue despite what seems to be an English band name. And let me be the first to thank you: I now have Mas Que Nada among my music collection!! Always wondered what that song was called. PP

I’m glad someone's enjoying the disc! Thanks for saving the blog from a coma...

The Jaguars are a Japanese band from the 60’s – there have been a few compilations put out of this kind of garage rock from various corners of the globe – this track is from one called GS I Love You...

BTW, there is also a great garage band Les Jaguars from Quebec – they all wear matching leopard print blazers and play lilting, drunken surf-style instrumentals and Beach Boys covers peculiarly translated into Quebecois (Fun, Fun, Fun becomes Fume, Fume, Fume (Smoke, Smoke, Smoke)).

Mas Que Nada is a classic track covered by many people including an amazing Dizzy Gillespie instrumental version.

Hello George,
Speaking In Tongues is just a mixed CD that I made for a few friends - it was never sold or released commerically. Your song came from a CD called Afrika Underground: Jazz Funk & Fusion Under Aparthied.
Unfortunately, you did not leave your email, so I have no way to reply to your comment. If you like, you can reach me directly at len@lensenater.com
